Not only did we have a cheer competition and a dance recital to contend with this weekend, Mila had a small matter of her very first friend birthday party. We've had little get-togethers with the people I consider my "chosen family," but this time Mila had the chance to invite all of her preschool class plus a few other kids she knows. Nothing but her people.

All 21 of her people, in fact. 21 four and five-year olds. That sounds like a terrible idea, right?

Maybe it was, but I'll never know because PEOPLE ARE THE WORST. Why is it difficult to RSVP for a party? That is a thing I will never understand. I get forgetting until the last second, but to completely ignore an invite? WHY? Is it really that hard to send an email with, "Won't be able to make it. Sorry!"

I had one person RSVP that they weren't coming.

Six said they were going to be there.

Three kids showed up. Three. I had enough food for 15 plus their parent because that was my best guess at what actual would look like, but THREE. THREE.

The good news is that Mila is still little enough to not be disappointed by such things. I was disappointed on her behalf, but from her viewpoint, she had SO much fun running and playing and blowing bubbles and eating and all of the things. There were cupcakes and there was singing. The gifts were perfect, the decorations were spot on, and basically she had the best day of her life. She would like to have another birthday party, please and thank you.

Next year I'm letting her invite 40 kids. Just to be safe. Because LOOK AT HER. How can I not let her have her way all of the time?
