Last year at probably close to this time, I was cautiously eying the summer camp that Alexis attended forever ago. It's basically daycare, but with field trips and pool days and lots of time spent outside playing. While Alexis was never a fan, I knew Mila would be and maybe they could be open and keep everyone safe? Maybe?
It was open for two whole weeks last year before shutting down because of some positive COVID cases.
But this is 2021 and while 2021 started out looking like 2020's ugly twin sister, along came science with a vaccine and things are definitely looking up. We're inching toward 2021 being the pretty twin! And summer camp is open with appropriate precautions and maybe it'll stay open this time?
Maybe?
I most certainly hope so because Mila has gone twice and she freakin' loves it. There are people there and she loves people.
It also needs to stay open because Alexis works there. Oh, yes, the original Burgh Baby is old enough to have a job where she gets paid like some sort of faux adult or something. It's ridiculous, but hooray for her for landing a GOOD first job. Camp counselor looks good on her.
The best part so far was the delightful moment when I got to make a 20-something year-old kid feel reeeeeal old. I was dropping off Mila and the counselor was taking her temperature through the open car window. (We're going to ignore how that's the dumbest of the "preventative" measures we've had because I like that we're not letting sick people be at things no matter what they're sick with.) The counselor glanced up at Alexis, who was second on my drop-off list, and asked, "Didn't you used to go to camp here?"
Alexis, of course, confirmed that she did. I, being the jagoff that I am, chimed in. "Yeah, and now she works here."
The camp counselor holding the thermometer looked like she wanted to fall over dead right that second. Apparently she has worked there for six summers, which is just long enough to remember tiny Alexis while also working side-by-side with faux adult Alexis.
You're welcome to every person who now feels old. WELCOME TO MY CLUB! We have Werther's here.
