She's a Rock Star Living in a Pop World

If I were to put together the soundtrack of our lives since Alexis was born, it would consist almost entirely of Signing Time songs. That's not necessary a bad thing since Signing Time is pretty much a kazillion times better than mind-numbingly painful kids music like Yo Gabba Gabba, but it's still a little sad to me. I would love to inject a bit more Modern Rock. If only most of my favorite bands had the IQs required to make it more than five words without cussing . . .

Anyway, occasionally Alexis will get hooked on some random pop song. I guess she's a pop girl living in a pop world, because we've had many phases of poppy goodness. There was a Nelly Furtado phase. There was a (thankfully) brief dip into the Britney insanity. There was a very long (perhaps still going) Justin Timberlake phase. And now we have entered the P!nk phase.

Yeah. So, that's the Na Na Na Na Song. Alexis has titled it as such, and the two of us spent over 40 minutes watching the video over and over and over on my laptop this evening. I'm thinking there are probably a few scenes she probably shouldn't see, and certainly the theme of starting a fight isn't exactly ideal for a 2-year old, but at least that song doesn't make ME want to start a fight like that damn Mickey Mouse Clubhouse song does.

Bring on the P!nk.

LOL. If you get "Victor Vito" by Laurie Berkner stuck in your head EVERY. SONG. becomes Victor Vito. I swear!

The Howler is currently in a country phase. I liked it better when she was in a 70's phase (and mostly fondly recall the Tom Petty Full Moon Fever phase.)

Dude, Rachel is totally crushing on me. :}

It's entirely mutual.

I overheard my 4 year old singing "American Boy" by Estelle and Kanye West the other day... and all I could think was that I was so grateful she wasn't singing "I Kissed A Girl" by Katy Perry!

Oh I am SO not jealous. That Gabba thing - there was an entire chicken drumstick in his tummy, bones and all. Does that not disturb anyone else?

September 24, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterFlea

the child has rhythm. maybe you could get her into a rock band ....

September 24, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterthe planet of janet

Great! You can become a pushy stage mom and get her into a girl-band! Perhaps you should channel tthis rhythm into dancing instead?

She and Micah are soul mates. I can tell by the way they dance.

We only get 4 seconds of it? How rude are you? I was ready to rock out with Alexis!!

My littlest one (5) came home last year, and told me about a song his friend taught him.

"Girls don't like boys, girls like cars and MONEY!!" (Good Charlotte)

'Nuff said.

I would welcome Pink at this point...Hannah is "in love" with that damn Kid Rock, All Summerlong song and I am about ready to go out and find Kid Rock and kick him.

My 90-year old man stuck in a three-year old's body loves the oldies station. If I'm switching through the stations (yes, I have two oldies stations in my car presets) and I don't like a song on the oldies and try to chage it, he'll yell "I LIKE THAT SONG!" So yeah, Pink? Would be a great thing, because then I wouldn't feel like my parents.

September 24, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterCatwoman

I think P!nk should have called that song the Na Na Na Na Song. Brilliant!

September 24, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterCecily R

I am terrified for the days that lie ahead!!! Think my kid will be 100% devoted to the Beatles??? I can only hope

September 24, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterDanielle

@danielle--Man, even the Beetles would get old after the fortieth eleventh sixth time listening to the same song. *sigh*

My daughter is addicted to my IPod and can't get enough of Pink. Thank goodness, if I hear one more "Go Diego Go" I am going to scream.

September 24, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterHeidi

Yo Gabba Gabba totally freaks me out! They must be totally high.

Alexis is So cool!!

September 24, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterElaine A.

Dude. She needs Paula Abdul to do her moves. Just saying.

September 24, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterAnglophile Football Fanatic

AWESOME! I am so exceedingly grateful that my kids love the music I listen to - though they will both rock out IMMEDIATELY to anything Laurie Berkner.

September 24, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterFishsticks and Fireflies

We've got "For the Kids" albums 1 and 2. They're tolerable. I tend not to remind the kids that "Kidstuff" exists on Sirius radio because it irks me. And Yo Gabba Gabba makes me scratch my head. And reach for the remote. It crosses the line to where I'd rather listen to angry whining children than the "music" in the show.

September 24, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterSarah

I cannot WAIT to be past the HOTDOG song from Mickey Mouse Club House. I would even take some Brit Brit over it...maybe.

September 24, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterBrittany

When my girls were Alexis' age I had them singing Beatles songs and saying things like "Beatles Rock". Not anymore.

The love the barbie movies and the barbie songs, and high school musical and the cheetah girls ... oh you have so much pop (and even more aweful) music coming your way.

September 24, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterI am a Tornado ~ proven fact!

Oh, I've started my girls on storybooks in the car and they love 'em. Some classics like Pippi Longstocking, or some short stories like this awesome storyteller Bill Harley http://www.amazon.com/Dinosaurs-Never-Please-Bill-Harley/dp/B000093NQ9

Your local library may have some, and if you are card carrying member of Carnegie Library, you can go on their website and order ANYTHING you want delivered to the library (carnegie of course) of your choice! It's awesome and it's free!

September 24, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterI am a Tornado ~ proven fact!

she is so sweet dancing!
my neices have not gotten into the pop stuff yet...but the three year old likes to sing the sponge bob theme repeatedly..in the car...loudly.

September 24, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterErinPatricia

Yo Gabba Gabba isn't any better than Teletubbies was. WTF were they thinking when they created these shows?

We love Signing Time, and Laurie Berkner, but the funniest thing my kids have gotten into is Journey and Tom Petty LOL "Free Fallllllin'!" haha, my 4 year old rocks that one HARD!

nice headband...very retro- flashdancey

September 24, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterBirdie

Awesome! Rock on, baby!!

September 24, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterDenise

So cute My 2 year old boogie's to the Muffin Man. lol! Pink would be a nice change of pace.

September 24, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterHeatherY

She's cool. She's very cool. Especially in her matching accessories.

September 24, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterJen

Miss Alexis and I are Song Sisters. That is my all time favorite song at the moment! She's definately got the moves. I must say I was a little disappointed, I expected to hear her singing the song like I do everytime I hear it and I don't care what anyone around me thinks!!

September 24, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterThe Purple Pinkie

Hey, it's a strong woman role model. I kinda love Pink's take on fashion too. I so want to be Alexis when I grow up.

September 24, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterhoneywine

Yo Gaba Gaba scares the hell out of me. Especially the one with the freakishly long arms that just flop uselessly at its side.

Just thought I'd share.
