A New Chapter in the Same Boy Band Book
There was a point a few months ago when it dawned on me -- Justin Timberlake is to Alexis what Davy Jones was to me when I was her age. To put it bluntly, EWWWWWW! WHY DO YOU LIKE HIM, MOM?
She's far more vocal about it than I was, but I distinctly remember thinking it was gross that my mom liked an aging pop star who had clearly peaked years before. Now, I'd argue that Timberlake hasn't hit that peak necessary, but whatever. I kind of see why she doesn't like him. He's your mom's pop star.
And, of course, so are NKOTB.
I have tried and tried and tried to convince the child that NKOTB is reasonable music. I have failed miserably. I think all of that type of pop sounds pretty much exactly the same, but she KNOWS. She can sense the difference from miles away and she instantly starts changing lyrics and complaining.
I gave up when she sang a little ditty called "Poopin Tough."
So there's your answer to why I didn't bother taking her to the concert. There are other reasons as well, of course, but that's the main one. She would have whined her fool head off.
But! BUT! I thought for sure I could play a little video action for her and she would see a glimpse of the fun that is a concert with lots of singing and dancing. Does it really matter who is doing the singing and dancing? Of course not!
She made it through about 2 seconds of the Step by Step video before she slapped her hands over her ears and yelled, "TURN OFF THAT NOISE."
She's seven going on seventy, obviously. She's also completely clueless about what constitutes "noise." But, whatever. I turned it off and we carried on with our morning.
When we got in the car for our morning trek to camp, I surprised the little music critic with something she wasn't expecting. I had purchased the new Big Time Rush album because they don't make me insane and she really likes them. That's as good as it gets when it comes to us sharing music -- nobody is miserable. As soon as Alexis figured out what was going on, her face broke out in a giant grin. She started bopping and dancing in her seat, clearly ecstatic to have some new BTR to enjoy.
As she spread her joy all across the back seat of my car, I felt it was appropriate to make a little point. She who considers NKOTB and Justin Timberlake to be "noise" and "awful" probably shouldn't enjoy another chapter of that same boy band book without considering the fact that there will be a day when she will happily be reliving her musical childhood and her daughter will cover her ears and yell "TURN OFF THAT NOISE."
Just in case Alexis forgets that she has that moment coming to her, here it is. The reminder. These things happen with every generation.

To get around that possibility that my daughter might not like NKOTB, I've been listening to them since birth. Alongside Taylor Swift, NKOTB are her favorite songs to listen to! :)
i am surprised. truly.
