Bring It, Y'all

Alexis has a list. It's a short list because at the end of it all, her answer is "Charlie." Boy or girl, Charlie is the one name that she thinks must be given to her *ahem* hypothetical sibling.

She's had it figured out for months. For what it's worth, she's pretty convinced she'll be calling a brother Charlie.

Those of us who have to actually sign a birth certificate and make a name for a *ahem* hypothetical sibling legal and stuff aren't so sure. And by "not so sure" I mean "I guess we should start talking about that."

Whoops.

By the way, we've had a conversation about it. One. Yesterday. It went a little like this:

"Girl name?"

"<insert perfectly normal name that some of you probably love here>"

"Everyone I know with that name is either insane or REALLY insane. No."

"What about a boy name?"

"Buford."

"That's not funny."

"It's not meant to be funny."

Aaaaannnd ... scene. That's how far we got.

Anything I like, he hates. Anything he likes is absolutely out of the question.

Help.

No rules. No guidelines. We have no ideas, so any ideas are potentially good ideas.

Ahem, I'm from India and there is one girl name, I think, works equally well in the east and the west - Maya (or for a more new-agey spelling: Maia). The meaning kind of fits perfectly with the 'hypothetical' part of the baby you are hypothetically having. :)

I really liked playing with the name explorer on babycenter.com for my second (http://www.babycenter.com/page/babyName/nameBrowser.htm?nameId=5205&nameType=sibling). Granted, many of those names are a bit much, but it sparked ideas.

Also, I got a bunch of name books from the Library. Some I never even opened, but sometimes it was good inspiration to randomly open to some pages and see what was there. Sometimes it stirred an idea.

I work on an OB floor.. A lot of vowel names going on right now for girls (Emma, Ella, Emily, Ana, Ava...) The boy names are Jack, William, Mason, Samuel. Really old fashioned and simple right now. I did once take care of a little boy named Cobra.. I'm sure she wouldn't mind you stealing it!

I would go with Amanda for sure though ;) Alexis and Amanda... very nice.

I checked our family tree to see if anything popped out and felt right.

We actually had Charley on our short list for a girl :) It was my great-grandfather's name and I wanted to use it somehow. We ended up with a boy, and used Charles as a middle name.

My grandmother's name was Adelaide and we often thought that if we had a girl we would call her that and Addy for short.

Our families are English and Irish so we wanted a British Isles name for our son - he is Ian. We had agreed that if we had a boy the middle name would be my mother-in-laws maiden name and if we had a girl we would use my mother's maiden name for a middle name. There are some great surnames in the family that would have also made good first names - Walker, Jordan, Joyce, Ferris and Westcott to name a few.

I'm with Alexis...Charlotte for a girl and Charles for a boy...Charlie either way.

At least her suggestions are reasonable. :)

I love Jacob and Emily. But Alexis does have the right idea, Charlotte or Charles, Charlie either way.

If you've never been sucked in by the Baby Name Voyager, I highly recommend it. Most of the Baby Name sites drive me crazy, but this one was recommended to me by an engineer, and he was right. You can track the popularity of names over time, and double-click to see more information about names that you're considering. There are annoying flashing ads, but it's worth it.

Charlene for a girl = Charlie, as well. I second the suggestion to consider family surname as first name. Good luck!

Named the Toad (Theodore Stanley, nick is Theo) after my grandfathers...the Howler is actually a mash up of both our first & middle names. She also has the same monogram as mMy Sweetie, her dad. Her RL nick is the boy spelling Kerry. If the Howler had been a boy, "he" would have been named after both our dads, Victor George. I guess it's obvious that I like naming after someone, and especially for boys, I like old fashioned names! Also, I like the idea that he or she will not have to use a last initial to be distinguished from the 3 other children with the same first name in the classroom! (Yes, there is a Toad story that goes with that...2Megans both with last initial S. In kndergarten, he wondered aloud what Megan Smith's last name was. They're 25 now, and he still calls her by 1st & last name.)

I bet you could sell your baby girl on a name along the lines of Sid, Geno, Kris, Brooks, or Flower.

I'm just too shocked that Crosby isn't her choice - that could easily be boy or girl. Shocked, I tell ya!

I think girls' names are easy and all beautiful. Boys' names are impossible. We only have two boys and we couldn't come up with a name for our second for HOURS. It's tough. All this is to simply say Good Luck! Can't wait to hear it!

You're welcome to the names I suggested to my Mom when I found out I would be a big sister. Mindy for a girl. And for a boy... Mork.

April 30, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterAmy

I know a girl named Charlie Jane. I love it. Two girls names at the top of our list that never got used were Annika and Piper. Boys are tough. I like Tyson.

Boy: Matthew Kieran
Girl: Fontella Inez (thats what my Dad wanted to name me)

First I have to say I think Charlotte and Charles to be called Charlie regardless of sex are great names.
Other names: Miranda, Eliza, Zoe, Jane and for boys Wesley, Peter, Matthew are some of my favorites. Some names of kids (nice, good kids) we know that are different but not way out there: Thora, Amelia, Willow for girls and boys Grant, Oscar, Wyatt.
Good luck! We stuck with our daughter's birthname so did not really go thru this. I'm sure whatever you pick will be perfect for your new little person.

Because I have no plans to ever have offspring I'll share the names I've liked and will likely give to a dog someday:
Boys- Wyatt, Bo or Beau, and Benjamin
Girls: Ella or Mae (after my great grandmother)

I'm Elizabeth Anne who goes by Libby. Pretty unique and I get lots of compliments. I also have an Aunt Charli, so go Alexis!

BUFORD. OMG name the hypothetical tiny human Buford. Boy or girl: Buford.

May 1, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterAllison

don't hate me - but I'm with Alexis on Charlie boy or girl. I actually thought of that for a girl name when we were pregnant with Brady - Charlotte, nicknamed Charlie. It's a spunky name. I also enjoy Riley which could go either way (and was almost Brady's name). xo

Girl: Tess or Tessa, Angela, Morgan

Boy: Sean, Eric, Ryan

Good luck!

My Rachel is a Rachel because it was literally the only name we agreed on. A name will come to you, no need to worry. And really, you're not going to know if it really fits until baby arrives anyway.

May 1, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterelizabeth

If I had had children the girl name would have been Avery Rose (this was before Avery becomes so popular) and the boy name was Thomas Joseph to be called TJ . I really like Amelia (my great grandmothers name on my mother's father's side). For what it is worth, I also like Melissa Anne.
