Day One Hundred Thirty-Nine

Considering I've lived in Pittsburgh longer than anywhere else at this point, it would seem logical that I would have visited Fallingwater a few times. But ... nope. I had never been up until last week when I drug the girls there.

I say "drug," but they were both happy to go. Mila heard "Hike in the woods" and was in. Alexis was all, "That's the house we studied in Geometry!" For real, she was very excited about that fact. Because she's a nerd.

As with all responsibly run things these days, we had "timed" tickets and had to show up within a specific window. It's been a while since I tried to coordinate two girls getting to a place that's far away at a specific time, and let me just tell you, I have lost that skill. I have no idea how we managed to get there on time. It certainly wasn't with the help of the two girls who couldn't focus on getting in the car if their lives depended on it.

Once we were there, we basically wandered outdoors for hours. We hiked nearly every trail, much to Mila's glee, and managed to not see a single other human the entire time. We ended the trip with a quick look at the house, which is exactly when things got interesting.

I'll start by admitting that Fallingwater isn't my style. I recognize the engineering feat required to balance a house over a waterfall, but I would have painted the stucco a different color FOR SURE and there are some odd design choices that definitely aren't my cup of tea.

Alexis agreed. We were talking about how an update might make it more to our taste, and how everything is rather masculine in style, and all of that when it happened.

Mila. Mila happened.

After two solid hours of not seeing other humans, one of the people who work at the house walked near us. He walked near us juuuuuust in time to hear Mila loudly declare, "Wow, this place a dump!"

So, uh, yeah. My kids have no appreciation for anything. Ever.

Actually, I agree with you guys. I could never figure out the excitement over Fallingwater; I always thought it was rather brutish looking and the engineering was faulty (has been stabilized, though). Wright had a poor understanding of reinforced concrete. It's certainly interesting but I can easily resist the urge to gasp in wonder.
