Feeling Like An Unwanted Can Of Creamed Corn
It started with an innocent question. Months ago, Alexis batted her eyes and sweetly asked, "Can you make my birthday cake this year, Mindy?"
And with that, my dreams were shattered. WOE IS ME.
My friend Mindy, of course, agreed to do the short person's bidding because how do you say no to this face?
YOU DON'T.
But with that simple question, I was fired. Dismissed. Shoved to the back corner of the cabinet like a can of creamed corn.
Each and every year of Alexis' life I have sought to overachieve in the cake and cupcake department for her birthday. I go to ridiculous lengths to make a fantastic cake that far exceeds my abilities and a bunch of cupcakes that are LIKE WOAH. Here. Memory Lane. Feel free to walk along it.
But not this year. Because I was fired.
I pouted about the whole thing to Alexis a few weeks ago because I am, obviously, a mature adult who would never consider guilt tripping her own kid. Ahem.
"Alexis, I'm really sad I don't get to make your birthday cake this year," I told her a few days ago.
"Don't worry, momma. Mindy will do a better job than you anyway," she replied. LIKE A KNIFE TO THE HEART.
I know she was right, but still. STILL. Couldn't she have lied and said she didn't want to see me stress over it or something?
WHATEVER. I decided to embrace my newfound reduction in responsibilities. I poured my heart and soul into making food for the birthday party and began dreaming of the cupcakes I would make for Alexis to take to school.
And then she told me.
"Momma, I don't to take birthday treats to school," she told me.
"WHAT? WHAT DO YOU MEEEEEAN?" I replied.
"I don't want everyone to sing to me so I'm not going to take treats," she replied with a sad little look on her face.
So. No complicated cupcake plotting for me.
Unless one of you has a request. In that case, GAME ON.

Umm, I like cupcakes :-D
Although, I also love canned creamed corn, so perhaps you shouldn't trust me on anything.
It hurts when they stomp on your heart and grind it mercilessly into the ground without even realizing it. But! That's the key, they don't even think about it. She probably even thinks you're the best mom ever for letting Mindy bake the cake, since it was different and special that way.
You can totally make cupcakes for my birthday in April. I promise to take them to (grad) school and have everyone sing. :-)
I went through that phase for a while, too. I actually didn't have a birthday party for a few years because I didn't want to be the center of attention. I think my parents were simultaneously worried about my self-esteem and thrilled that they didn't have to let a bunch of third-graders take over the house!
I just want to know what's wrong with your cupcakes?
MONSTER HIGH
our children are kindred spirits
please make me cupcakes
that face... you're screwed ;-)
Ill be getting married next year...I can contact you about cupcakes ;)
How do you feel about cookies? My birthday is in May and I am a cookie person. Or Brownies, or cake, or well ummm sweet things - who am I kidding - everything sugar!
If you can ship me the cupcakes (or any other baked good for that matter) I'll gladly take them. I'm laughing about the creamed corn reference. I got a wild hair last time I was at the store, and bought a couple of cans even though I haven't had it since I was a kid and I thought it was disgusting. I mentioned it to my husband, and come to find out he doesn't like it either. How I didn't know this after 12 years together is beyond me. I fixed it anyway because I can't let it go to waste, and it wasn't as bad as I remembered.
You can make me or my kids cupcakes anytime you want.
I have a birthday in March and a wedding in April and I love cupcakes. :) I also live in Florida, so depending on how the rest of your winter goes, it might not be that hard to convince you to take a trip south.
My birthday is in March, and I might be going to the beach to celebrate, you can always join me and bring cupcakes....I won't complain.
Mmmm creamed corn. Were you around when Juliana told Mindy that she had two important things to do every year - make cakes for both of their birthdays?
I can't believe there were no school cupcakes!!! Doesn't she understand how much you love making them?
Start thinking of super fun cupcake ideas for the boys' 4th birthday in April!
You could make cuppa cakes for meeee! I won't even feel guilty eating every single one - everyone knows revenge cupcakes are calorie-free.
In other news - Kids: it's a good thing they're so cute. Otherwise? They'd be outta here.
My kid will never ask me to bake her cupcakes, cake, or pretty much anything for that matter. I am the anti-Martha (although I was pretty proud of the treat bags I made for my kid's party last year, and pretty upset I took 0 pics of them).
Yeah, let me, more or less, echo the above: You can make me cupcakes anytime. Sadly my usual baker closed her shop, so it looks as if it's the grocery store for us for my kid's half-birthday treat this year.
Not a sweets fan (yeah, I know....I'm odd), but seriously would love the unwanted creamed corn! Or at least a consolation prize of recipes of things that travel well (need a recipe to take to class, and I live an hour away....)
mindy kicked ass on that cake. i mean, i am certain you would have done a wonderful job, but how sweet is it that alexis wanted to be gifted with a cake from a friend?
if you want to fuss, you can always make me those angel food cupcakes with the goods in the middle...
