Just a Tiny Human in a Middle School World

Alexis had her school open house this week, which, whatever. I find open houses to be weirdly useless. It's like four minutes of small talk with each teacher, but for no real reason. It's not like if I instantly think one is terrible I can do anything about it. (Nor should I.)

But! This time Mila was allowed to attend open house with me and Alexis. That's new, I think. In the past open house has seemingly been just for parents, but this time they figured out that the parents would spend a lot less time wandering around lost if they each had an escort. Once you're letting the middle schoolers hang, you might as well make it a family affair.

Three things happened:

1. Mila stuffed herself into a locker and tried to lock the door. I don't know if she's planning what she's going to do to herself some day or what she's going to do to other people, but everyone should consider this a warning. She understands locker doors.

2. Mila got weirdly mad about how Alexis knew so many people but she didn't. It really truly bothered her that she didn't already have everyone's names and phone numbers and ZOMG ALEXIS KNOWS PEOPLE. That's so unfair!

3. There is one teacher who Alexis has opinions about. I'm aware of those opinions because the kid jumps aboard her Whine-asawki at least once per week and whiiiiiines and whiiiiiiines about that teacher. She basically thinks the teacher is a nice enough person, but terrible at their job.

Whatevs. Alexis still has to figure out how to function within that world.

Alexis knows I'm very honey badger about her opinions, so she kept them to herself when we walked into that classroom. I greeted the teacher, we chatted for a second, blah, blah, blah. As we were walking out, Mila made a face, glared at the teacher, and then REALLY loudly said, "That is a BAD teacher, momma."

Here's to hoping that teacher retires in the next eight years. Otherwise, Mila is in for it.

This on the heels of your last post...the only thing worse than being a parent at Open House and making 4 minutes of awkward small talk, is being the teacher and making four minutes of awkward small talk with every.single.family. omg. evil flashbacks.

and if you're super lucky, you can do it in two languages! yay!
