Lurking in Our Bushes

A few weeks ago, I was attacked by a bird as I walked down our driveway. This bird, to be exact:

Of course, the only time birds care if you walk down your own driveway is when they have something to hide. She did.

Four tiny blue eggs. A few days later, the four tiny blue eggs turned into this:

They pretty much looked like something the cat hacked up. Fuzzy little balls. On the second day, the fuzzy little balls figured out how to do the blind begging for food thing.

Then on the third day, I caught them all waiting for food at one time.

On the fourth day, they started to open their eyes.

And they might kinda sorta actually be looking a little bit like actual birds, except for when I catch them all lined up sleeping.

Then they just look like fuzzy little balls with beaks.

Today they turned five-days old, but just looking at eggs to four-days old? HOLY MOLEY. I thought human babies grow quickly, but birds kick our butts on the growing up too fast thing. I expect to catch them flying any minute now.

Those shots are INSANE! You really should send them somewhere. Is there a magazine about birds?! We have some baby birds next door, and a couple of them were in our yard. I think the first attempt at flight didn't go too well. I am a nervous wreck that Dylan will step on one of them!

I once got to watch a nest full of robins develop, right on my deck. Honestly, it was like zero to flying in just over a week. That gave me a terrible case of Empty Nest Syndrome.

love, love, love these shots. last year i had robins build a nest in the corner of my porch roof. every day i looked at those tiny eggs and watched mesmerized as they hatched and the babies grew. my favorite moments were when they were all sleeping at the same time. so precious. if you are able to continue publishing photos of them as they grow, i for one would really enjoy them.

They're so cute! If you're around enough the mom will get used to you and let you watch them grow up. Maybe this will help Alexis with her fear of birds! (I have a pet bird who thinks he's a dog, so I'm a bit biased and think birds smaller than a hawk are nothing to be afraid of)

Absolutely love the photos! I think they are chipping sparrows. Keep us posted on their progress, please.

Oh my gosh, girlfriend. Lovely series. Seriously. Submit these to Birds and Blooms magazine. Which is, of course, my favorite magazine. Because I'm 90. (My grandma-in-law bought me a gift subscription because I kept stealing hers. Ahem.)
