Straight A-Head
October is already shaping up to be one of those months that passes by faster than I can blink, so when we saw a decent weather forecast for this past weekend, we decided to make the most of it.
Pumpkin farm time.
And this is where you should be distracted by STRAIGHT HAIR OMG HOW DID THAT HAPPEN?
How, indeed.
Alexis begs me to straighten her hair every single day and has for approximately the past two years, except that it has felt more like an eternity because GIVE IT UP, KID. Curls. She has them. There is no amount of wishing and hoping that's going to change that, so she really should just accept her hair for what it is.
She isn't going to.
So she woke up Saturday morning with desperation in her voice and begging on her To Do List. Initially I completely blocked her out, but then I thought about it for a second.
Blackmail. I know for a fact that I can blackmail the kid to do anything in exchange for straightening her hair. Half an hour after I reached that realization, the family room was really super clean.
So I straightened.
And then held it over her head ALL DAY LONG.
What's that? You don't want to cooperate for a photo?
"I straightened your hair. Now smile."
"Oh, we spent money for animal food and now you're too scared to feed the camel? TOO BAD. I STRAIGHTENED YOUR HAIR."
Lest you be concerned for the poor curl-challenged child, this photo was taken about ten seconds after the teary one.
She was happy. It just took her a second to warm up to the joy of fuzzy things that don't live in her house.

And man was she happy. All day long. I'm sure part of it was because she was with some of her favorite friends.
But part of it was because she felt pretty with her hair straight.
I hate that she doesn't love everything about herself just the way she is.

Maybe she feels prettier with her hair straight because it's a "special" thing. When I was younger, I felt prettier when my mom curled my hair. Looking at pictures from that time.....curls were definitely a mistake. I looked like Tina Turner and Heidi had a lovechild. But she only curled my hair on special occasions, so I felt pretty and special. That's my glass-half-full way of looking at it, anyway.
She is such a doll! I agree with Dana tho.. it is the specialness of the straight hair. My girls found those headband curls on youtube and keep begging for them. I haven't given in yet.. but I may soon. I know it would be easier if they just liked themselves the way that they are.. but sometimes.. it is nice to have that extra time spent on us.. then we feel different and special.. andlike we are worth that extra time. At least that is what my oldest said to me the other day.. I cried after she left for school of course..
I have naturally curly hair, and I always wanted straight. Now everytime I get my hair cut or colored, I have the hairdresser straighten it. It's fun for a couple days, then I miss my curls. We're never happy with what we have.
I finally decided not to fight mother nature and have had worn my hair curly for 10 years now. Except when my hair is short and then I have the most unbelievable body. It took me until my late 30's to love myself. I hope it happens much sooner than that for her.
It kills me, because straightened, her hair looks just like E's, who constantly wants me to curl hers, so it will look curly like (like A's)
Well, I can tell you that growing up, I always thought that my curly hair looked messy. My sister and friends had straight hair and it look less messy and almost neat. Of course in my day, I had no idea that I could straighten my hair, so I just learned to live with it. And eventually I learned how awesome my curls are.
I also agree that straightening A's hair is something fun for her. I feel a bit a fun (and kinda sassy!) when I straighten my hair.
I noticed the straight hair right away! My teenager straightens her hair almost every morning. I wish she would learn to love the curls but it doesn't happen just because they show up out of the blue one day at age 12 or 13.
I had stick-straight hair as a little girl. Bright blonde, and straight as can be. All I wanted was darker hair that was curly.
Then I hit puberty, and got darker hair that began to curl.
Now I want straight hair again.
It's a never ending battle. I hope Alexis doesn't hate her curls forever. She may learn to embrace them some day.
Love the pumpkin shot!
lucky for her she can wear it either way and look spectacular. obviously i am partial to curly hair and wish she would embrace it since she certainly can rock it.
that photo with alexis feeding the pigs made my day, but i did love the before and after camel feeding images. oh hell, who am i kidding...i loved all of these fall pictures. sorry i missed the adventure!
For the record, I am OBSESSED with her gorgeous curls! Hope she learns to love them, too! They (and she!) are beautiful as can be!
She is gorgeous no matter what, but I really like her curls. :) I guess is because my hair is so straight that curls will only last for a second after I do them.
I'm with Mexmom- I do love my straight hair, but it refuses to hold curl so I feel like I don't get any variety. You could maybe sell Alexis on the fact that she has options?
Okay, I just saw a glimpse of the teenager in her in that photo of her smiling while feeding the pig! Like, WOAH!
