The 5th of July is Just as Boomtastic
As someone who didn't grow up anywhere near Pittsburgh, the concepts of townships and municipalities and that thing where there are 17,023,623 separate little governments within one county has always baffled me. I just don't get the purpose of having all of that duplication of services and such.
However, when my kid suddenly decides she is done being scared of fireworks, I use and abuse all of that duplication to the best of my abilities. A little googling here and there and I found myself a township that was doing their 4th of July celebration on the 5th of July.
HUZZAH! MORE STUFF THAT GOES BOOM!
You just go on with your bad self, Pittsburgh. Keep up all that redundancy.
(An aside--that photo is straight out of the camera. I kinda love that it looks fake when it's not.)

I agree, both to the weirdness of Western Pennsylvania government structures, and the picture. Its really cool. The Silly Slide sign gives it another dimension that just the firework wouldn't have. Bravo.
This isnt something specific to SWPA. It's the nature of a Commonwealth as opposed to a State. PA has layer after her of political subdivisions. 67 counties, 3200+ different forms of municipal governments (cities, townships, boroughs), 500 school districts (down from over 3000+), etc... It's this whole idea of local control that people seem so attached to. If only they would get that their lives could be so much simpler w/o all of those taxing entities.
The Fireworks Capital of America (New Castle, PA) is having their Fireworks NIght next weekend - 7/14. I'll be there! It's the home of Zambelli's International - a show almost as good as dahntahn's. Plus you have two competing nationalities - Polish and Italian. In other words GOOD FOOD.
July 5th fireworks always meant I got to have fireworks on my birthday, since apparently I was a little stubborn and was not born on the 4th LOL :)
And...Fireworks at Kennywood on July 17th...Italian Day tradition. We just decided we will be there after a change of original plans!
oh my gorgeous shot! incredible!
as a july 5th baby, i adore having fireworks practically every day of my birthweek. yaaaaaaay, pittsburgh!
