Theories and Hope
You know how sometimes you REALLY want to be wrong about something? I REALLY want to be wrong about something. To describe why I want to be wrong, I have to go back in time about eight years.
Eight years ago at this time, I couldn't stand junk food. AT ALL. I went from considering ice cream, french fries, and pizza food groups to gagging when I ate a honey graham cracker because OMG TOO SWEET BLECH.
It sucked.
Hard.
For nine solid months, everything I loved about food was wrong. My world was turned upside down as candy made me sick, french fries tasted disgusting, and just back away with your Taco Bell anything because PUKE.
And then Alexis was born.
*POOF!*
Suddenly, my love for junk food returned. My aversion to junk was all her fault. CLEARLY. She had taken over my sensibilities and taste buds while in the womb, but I took them right back again.
Fast forward a year or two, and you'll note that the kid was the first I'd ever met who couldn't be bribed with a M&M because she swore they were "yucky" and "too sweet" and HOW IS SHE MY KID?
It doesn't make any sense, but maybe it does. For as long as she was on board, she forced me into her healthy food preferences, but then she took that with her. Which, HOORAY! It's so nice having a friendly relationship with ice cream again.
Fast forward seven years or so to today and GIVE ME THE JUNK. ALL OF IT. MORE THAN EVER. Like, really, junk food is so my friend. Got any Halloween candy left? Because I can take care of that. How about some french fries? Taco Bell anything? DO YOU HAVE ICE CREAM? DO YOU?
Screw your soups and salads and veggie sandwiches. While they were required just five short months ago because I really do believe in balance, MEH. I don't need them now.
If this means that the next tiny person is going to be a lover of junk food, I am in *so* much trouble. SO MUCH.
I better be wrong about my theory that what you eat while pregnant is what the kid eats later. Ain't no way there can be someone who loves junk food more than me in this house.

I craved chocolate and spicy food with Fionn...what does he adore....you guessed it. With Cate I couldn't get enough fruit in me fast enough, and yep, she could eat fruit morning, noon, and night. With Maggie though, I don't know. I couldn't eat anything for a long time. All food made me sick for months. I did crave watermelon and water, and now she's basically a fish...not quite the same thing I know.
Good luck momma, I have to hide my chocolate from my boy.
I couldn't eat junk with Josh except occasionally ice cream and he LOVES chocolate. I think he has some kind of internal chocolate radar because we try to hide it from him.
OK, I promise to stop tweeting to you about Haggis.
During my two pregnancies I ate healthier than any other point in my life. I have J who could happy live on only junk food, R who will eat just about anything but will choose cheese over cookies at times, and W who could live on waffles, pancakes and toast.
So I wouldn't worry too much about it. This baby will grow up with his or her own feelings about food. I just hope this one likes cheese, because hating cheese is weird :)
I pretty much lived in spaghetti O's while I was pregnant with Owen. Now? he won't even share a can with me because he wants HIS OWN. Kid won't eat pizza, mac n cheese but GIVE HIM ALL THE SPAGHETTI OS!
Ooohhhh you are scaring me now, Michelle! You really are...
What do I make of the fact that the thing that makes me most sick and makes me throw up like crazy every.single.time is TOOTHPASTE!!
Not sure about the food, but it is likely a boy. Different set of hormons - different influence on your taste. That is at least the popular theory in Germany.
My sister btw existed in her first pregnance of ice cream. Vanilla with strawberry sauce. Emina is not a fan of this. She also shares her Ü-Ei (Kinder Suprise Egg - not available in the US sadly) with my sister. Emina wants the toy and give the chocolate to her mom. My sister thinks she is an alien, but at least a friendly alien.
Kids are weird :D
I absolutely refused to eat chicken with my 1st pregnancy and now, I have a 2.5 year that refuses any & all types of chicken, my husband blames it ALL on me. This pregnancy I cannot stand the sight of ground meat, so we shall see if this baby follows suit.
Congrats & Good Luck to you!
First off, I love your blog especially with posts like this! I crrrrrrrrrrrrrraved regular cheesburgers with my first girl, and with my second, super cheesy tacos. (My husband gets scared when I say I'm craving beef and cheese anything now.)
It's funny now, because both my girls love tacos, cheeseburgers and graham crackers (I ate a bunch of those too to get through morning sickness.) There's also now a fight over stuffing and mashed potatoes between us 3 at Thanksgiving since well, I was eating for 2 at those holidays both times - it's crazy!
Fingers crossed you get junk food buddy! :)
Blimpies, I lived on bigger bite Blimpie's subs when I was pregnant. Thank goodness most of them have closed down here in the south - I would be as big as a house if I had kept eating them. Congratulations!!!
My Mom craved hamburgers and cherry jello when she was pregnant with me. Love a good burger, can't stand Jello. With my son, I had morning sickness and then massive heartburn because the "little" dude took up so much space. The only thing that would settle my stomach down was pierogies - something I was not that fond of prior to pregnancy. The little dude is now 18, 6 feet tall and 220 lbs - and he has NEVER eaten a pierogie :-)
I actually have a feeling you're not wrong about your theory because I have the same theory. When my mom was pregnant with me, she craved cucumbers nonstop. I looooove cucumbers. I could sit down and munch on them all day, The thing that made her throw up if she so much as looked at it? Sausage. I hate sausage. Makes me gag. So. Yeah. Good luck with that! Sounds like you're going to have polar opposites there!
I just blogged about this! I'm pregnant for the second time (first time I had my daughter, this time pregnant with a boy) and I have the worst aversion to food in it's natural state - it's awful. I can manage fruit here and there, and last night I actually ate broccoli, but what I prefer is processed junk that barely resembles food. This is so far from how I normally eat that it's almost disturbing. My husband can't wait until I can stomach things like brussel sprouts and eggplant again but for now - gag - no.
you're not wrong. my children's DNA has turned me into a lover of tomatoes, bananas, cottage cheese and cantaloupe, things I would never have even looked at 9 years ago.
My oldest I craved green beans - and he'll eat any vegetable I give him. My 2nd I craved artichoke hearts and I'm still trying to get him to try them, mainly because I rarely have them in the house any more. Baby Girl I was all about pasta...and she's a carb machine (I craved KFC, but we don't live anywhere near one, THANK GOD, because I would've gained 30 pounds more!). Little One I can't really remember a craving so I guess that's why she's a pretty normal 4-year-old. I think your theory is spot-on. Truly. Maybe we should find a scientific study...or volunteer for one.
