A Painful Sacrifice
Dear Alexis,
By the time you are old enough to read all this, you will most certainly already know this, but I hate Mornings. Like, HATE them. If I had my way, the day wouldn't start until double digits. Even then, I would much rather have a coffee enema while having my nose hairs plucked out one-by-one that have to face the day before lunch. Mornings and me? Not on friendly terms. At all.
Sadly, I am forced to co-exist with my enemy Mornings. Being an adult comes with sometimes doing things you don't like, so I wake up at 6:30 every day and tolerate Mornings. Recently, however, I have taken things a step further. I've been getting up an EXTRA 15 minutes early. For you. Just for you.
See, it recently started snowing again, and you, YOU are in love. Nothing makes you quite as happy as sticking your tongue out like a landing strip for snow flakes as you weave an intricate recreation of Swan Lake in the yard. It pleases you immensely, and I would happily let you play outside all evening long, but my other enemy Daylight Savings Time means it is dark by the time we get home. So, if you want to play in the snow and actually SEE the flakes, it's got to be in the AM. Before work. Early. I have to get up earlier so you can play in the snow.
I only mention this because there will be a day when you are trying to decide between the nursing home that promises to wipe my butt hourly and one who promises to do it every four hours. Pick the one-hour service, please. It will make me happy. Not as happy as snow makes you, but still.
Love,

Awww! And why would they be wiping your butt hourly? I don't think I want to know.
I'm thinking your problems will be bigger than nursing homes if you need wiped hourly.
Bwa-ha-ha-ha-ha! I had a good comment all lined up in my brain and then I read Karen's. BWAAAAA!
haha I agree with Karen- MUCH bigger problems if you need wiped hourly.
And you my dear are a Super Awesome Mom for getting up 15 minutes early so she can play in the snow. Gold star for you!!
Getting up early just for snow--you must really like that kid ;)
Enjoy the snow!
(I love that sweet pic!)
Thanks to you and your ungodly hour of waking, I can now just quit pretending I have any shot whatsoever at Mother of the Year and revert to sloth. Which is way easier.
Awwwww.... you are so head over heels in love w/that girl! So sweet.
You totally crack me up! Can I copy the nursing home request line into a letter for my boys? Promise I will give you credit.
I bow to your devotion to that child. You're waking up early just for her, and here I'd probably just send the husband to go play. Especially at that ridiculous hour!
Since there is no way to top Karen's comment... which is brilliant, btw...
I'm just going to mention how absolutely adorable Alexis' little red nose is!
love the picture. And you win mommy of the year award. It's hard to get up early and feed them, IMO. Actually, it's still dark when I leave in the morning, so this will not be an issue for me. I try to let them make foot- and handprints when we get home.
ciao,
rpm
Oh, I remember those jammie mornings in the snow. The good news is they get out of that when they are 6. Mornings... I hear ya, let's start a protest.
That is love! I'm so glad she's grown to love snow. You are an awesome mom.
You definitely have some payback coming. :)
You my friend, are a good Mama :)
The things we do for children, just to insure living at the best nursing home. Enjoy the snow.
Oh you're good! I don't like morning or cold. ~shudder~
Y'all are cracking me up with the compliments. Clearly I need to do a post showing just how awful, no good, and terrible things are around our house. Complete with photos.
Bestest Mom on the PLANET.
Thanks for reminding me that it is the little sacrifices that matter most.
I'm dragging those girls otta bed 15 minutes earlier so we can dance in the snow (oh, they will so LOVE me for it). hehehehehe
ROFL! Brilliant post *s*
See ... my comment.
I'm a vengenful mom.
An evil mom.
And DAMN those girlys for making me that way!
....I'm just kiddin'
I am.
Seriously, it's sarcasm.
I won't really D.R.A.G. them outta bed.
so sweet... so selfless.... so hopeful for an optimistic elderlyhood...
My mom and I are both non-morning people. When I was a teenager we would both walk by and grumble at each other in the morning. Very funny.
Gorgeous shot!
Snow is love :)
cute picture!
you rock.
and TOTALLY deserve to have your butt wiped hourly.
That little lassie loves pulling 180s on you. Wasn't it that same angelic little gal who freaked out at the sight of white stuff a mere year ago? Fickle wumman. LOVE you, A.
I think you are not only a fabulous, generous mom for getting up early to let Alexis play in the snow, you are FREAKIN' BRILLIANT to be blogging about it so you have PROOF later when you need it. I have to admit, that last part impresses me more!
If you need a roommate in that 1-hour nursing home, please call me.
You're such a great mom for doing that! Alexis is very lucky to have a mom who allows her to appreciate life's mini-miracles while she can still be amazed by them. Beautiful.
I think you may need to have her sign a contract to that regard. Otherwise, you may be stuck with the place that wipes you once every 12 hours.
If you'd like, I can throw together that paperwork for you. It'll be acceptable if she signs in crayon, spaghetti sauce or whatever else she can get her hands on.
We rarely get snow down here. Usually it's ice and sleet but sometimes it's snow. So, when it does snow, I love it and so do my kids. Back in late 2006, it started snowing around 10 or 11pm. Kaylie was 6 at the time. She kept talking about how it was gonna snow. And was disappointed that wasn't snowing when she went to bed.
So, once it started really coming down, like big flakes, I went and woke her up, got her jacket on and she and I stood out on the balcony, pjs and all to watch.
I loved that little 15 or 20 minutes with her. Sharing something so simple like that is just awesome.
No snow Down South. It kills me - especially since I was looking forward to being not-knocked up and being able to ski with Mr. Tranny Head this winter.
PS - I'm with Karen. If you need your arse wiped hourly you're in biiig trouble.
I can't wait for snow! I'll love it for the first month or so and then I'll be cursing at it to just be gone already! We haven't had any where I live in NY yet, but my hometown has already been hit by two storms that dumped a foot each on them.
I'd totally get up early to let my kid play in the snow. But, that would mean waking HER up since she sleeps until 8:30 or 9 and that? Doesn't happen. Waking her early is similar to waking a hibernating bear. You only do it if you're seeking a thrill and want to get mauled.
The things we do for our kids, eh?
I just think it's so awesome that she loves snow this year! I remember last year how she wouldn't even walk on it and had big freakouts. She's really come a long way in one year in so many areas!
