2014 Was Pretty Amazing

As 2014 winds down, it's impossible to ignore the chatter about how this was "the worst year ever" or whatever.

Welp.

2014 was a hard year. There was a lot about it that sucked in a lot of ways, and that's putting it mildly. Without getting into too much of the awful details, there were deaths, lies, disappointments, and so much more.

Most of those things never made it into this space.

It's not that I'm here sugar-coating life, it's that I want the totality of this space to be positive. Some day when Alexis and Mila read my words, perhaps together, I want them to see how very loved they are and how much I focused on the good. Even when things are hard, I try to find the funny in it all. Long story short, it's that I think happiness is a choice. I do my damnedest to make that choice every day.

I don't always succeed. But I try.

Which is why I asked a question on Facebook today. It was a simple one: "What's the best thing that happened in your world in 2014?"

The replies. Man. There are some very major victories in there. In some instances, I know more of the story than what is conveyed on Facebook, so I know that thing that is written was the ray of sunlight in an otherwise stormy year. For some, 2014 was the worst year ever, but there was something good that happened.

I hope to always be able to find that something. It's always there.

(My answer to the question has blue eyes and screams at the top of her lungs when she smells food that she wants. She's pretty fantastic.

My other answer involves the Big Kid and how she worked her butt off this summer because she REALLY wanted to learn to do a back handspring. I was there when she landed one for the first time and it was the best thing ever.)

It sounds corny, but your little corner of light on the internet has helped brighten some pretty dark spots in my year. Thank you!

I do think happiness is a choice. But I also know some people have gone through so much, and they may not be able to say that or feel that same way.

When I read your FB post, I am almost sad to say that I could not think of any one great thing that happened to me in 2014. But even better is that there was not anything truly awful that happened to me in 2014, and I said that even after having to say good bye to my beloved dog (the reason I refused to do that year in review on FB). When I read your post, I was not even thinking of Sadie, whom I think of many times a day, so there is that. But I am all about life's little moments, and I have a good bit of those.

Here's hoping 2015 is better for a lot of people.
