It's WAY Past New Years, So They Can't Be Called Resolutions
The only thing that makes me twitch more than incessant whining is incessant whining about something that can be controlled. Whine about the weather, whine about your boss' love of singing hamster screen savers, but for the love of my sanity, don't whine about how you're bored or you're hungry or you're too fat or your shirt is ugly or whatever. Just do something about it.
And that is why I don't do New Years resolutions.
I've always been of the opinion that if I wake up one day and think something like, "Self, you eat worse than a goat walking through a landfill after smoking a joint. You really should start eating healthier food," I should probably just go ahead and make that change right away. Waiting until the calendar says it's a good day to start new things is the exact sort of procrastination I just don't need.
And, yet, this year I've been itching to make a list of somethings that might be mistaken for New Years resolutions.
I don't know if the itch is because I'll be turning 35 in a few weeks (O.M.G. ACK!) or if it's because last year really kind of sucked. It might be because this year started off so very perfectly. I dunno. I just know I feel like making a few . . . um . . . let's call them "goals" so I can keep a little bit of my dignity.
- I have GOT to start using my tripod and the remote for my camera more often. (Er, if you, um, maybe read between the lines, I'm saying I need to take more pictures that have me in them. EEK!)
- The playroom. It *IS* going to be fully decorated in the next few months. Hound me on this one, internet.
- Get some stuff hung on the walls all over the house. It's sort of embarrassing how bare many of our walls are.
- Get with the cooking. Before Alexis, I was pretty good about preparing meals filled with fresh and healthy stuff. We were essentially HFCS-free before it was cool to be HFCS-free. And then that whole time suck thing happened and I got lazy. She's independent enough now for me to not use her as an excuse. Besides, I fear that she may think that mashed potatoes come out of a box, and we can't have that.
- I'm working on having more days like this because I know it's up to me to decide to have them.
- Get better at using light effectively in photography.
Not resolutions. Goals. Actually, no, they're promises.
And, hey! I'm off to a good start on a couple of those, thanks to a day with this little one:
(That's Jack's baby brother.)

awwwww the preciousness!!! <3 love
I'm not a resolution maker.
However, I love your goals :P
My walls are embarassingly bare as well. I plan on fixing that this year. The cooking thing is on my list as well. I'm trying not to use the picky eater of a husband for my lack of cooking. He often insists that I can make what I want and he'll just have cheerios. I need to start taking him up on that.
And call me biased, but that might be the best picture that I've ever seen ;)
Isn't it sad that the only way we will get in a photo, is to use a tripod?!
Do other people yell at YOU when THEY don't have pictures of holidays or special events?
I would like them to make a resolution to TAKE THEIR OWN DAMN PICTURES.
Whew, I feel better now that I got that off my chest.
Those are great non-resolutions! The third one is on my list. So sad we've been here over a year and most of the walls are empty.
I'm the same way about starting something. I don't even wait for Monday. If I want to do something, I start it pretty much right then and there. I do, however, make resolutions (This year, I WILL run a 5K. Actually r-u-n it. But I started training in November because I didn't see a reason to wait until January 1st).
You need to hook up with one of your Pittsburgh photography buddies and make a challenge - something like who can take the most/best/craziest picture of THEMSELVES in a certain time frame. Change the criteria every month or so. Just a suggestion, but I love your pictures and I also like it when you link to others with talent.
Mmm, I like your stuffs.
For some reason, I thought you were only four years older than me. All the same, no freaking out. You know you're fantastic. But yes, more photos of you. Don't make me show up and stalk you so you get more pics of you with the family.
I too have goals regarding our walls and our food.
I have solved the healthy food problem when Husband is the one who is home to get dinner prepared (and who is allergic to preparing meals). "en pouchette". I went to the grocery this weekend and bought produce, meat, and fresh herbs. And nonstick foil.. Then when I got home I left it all on the kitchen table while I assembled 1 pouch for every dinner with starches, veggies, fruits, and protiens complete with seasoning and then stuck it in the freezer with a label stating what it was.
The walls I have a plan, but no action yet. I need to get going with more spackle...
Your goal list is somewhat similar to my (currently unposted) list! Except the playroom...we don't got one *lol* Photography is a big part of mine...of course, I don't have a subject as gorgeous as THAT to practice on!! Such a wonderful picture of a gorgeous babe :D
You have perfectly described why I don't do resolutions. We feel the exact same way. People just think I'm a party pooper though. Good luck on reaching your goals.
if you need help with the playroom, gimme a call. i work for pizza!
No fair! posting cute baby pictures to distract us from your "goals" !
I quit making resolutions years ago, because like most people, I would end up breaking them. And then I would just get frustrated with myself. After seeing the ADORABLE picture you posted, I decided I must make one resolution now: I resolve to hold at least one cute baby this year. : ) Oh, and to read a few more blogs than I did last year.
O. M. G. Yet another reason why I LOVE YOU. Everyday I come one day closer to saying goodbye to Facebook because I loathe reading the "I'm fat" status update (which is usually followed by the "So-And-So Just Checked In At McDonald's" listing), the "My house is a pigstye" status update (from the chick who appears to spend HOURS on-line, and the other endless list of things that the person has every capacity to fix. Like you, I am all about the goals - and about not waiting for the start of a New Year to get on them. It sounds so cliche, but I swear by meal-planning to make better/healthier/less-lazy meals (it also has the added benefit of making me take stock of my pantry and use the things that I have on hand rather than buying more boxed stuff.)
We are getting ready to undergo Project: Update The Interior around here. New doors, a little freshening up in the kids rooms, and something in my room that makes me want to do more than just sleep in it. I am looking to your playroom completion for inspiration!
First of all, what an adorable baby and a fabulous subject to practice your photography! I am also a photography junkie and cannot wait for my friend's baby to arrive in March. I will be snapping away every chance I get to continue with my one and only resolution... to take more photos!
