Remembering

One year ago today, it was snowing in Pittsburgh.

Alexis was overjoyed to see the snow. Her eyes sparkled with glee as she stomped around, simultaneously crushing the delicate flakes under her tiny shoes while keeping an eye to the heavens so she could catch more flakes with her tongue.

When the sun began to set, we ventured inside to dye some Easter eggs.

"It's PURPLE!" she declared, marveling at the magical mixture of red and blue.

One year ago today, their lives were shattered into a million pieces of sorrow and longing. Maddie was taken from them far too soon.

I wish I could fix it.

I wish I could change it.

I wish April 7th, 2009 had the same happy memories for them as it does for us.

I can't fix it.

I can't change it.

I can't make April 7th, 2009 be anything other than their worst nightmare.

I can, however, remember.

I remember Maddie. I remember that she is important. I remember that she matters. Still. And forever.

There was no question that we would come together again for the Pittsburgh March for Babies. Some amazing people had joined the team before I even announced that the team had been set up.

If you can, join us in walking on May 23rd to support the March of Dimes. If you can't, perhaps you can donate a few dollars in support of those of us who will be there marching and remembering.

Comments are closed because I'd rather you sent a little love over here. If you have any questions about walking or donating, please email me at burghbaby (at) gmail.com. :-)
