Stay Free to Be Comfortable and Confident (and a $100 Drugstore.com Gift Card!)
Eight appears to be the age of Questions and Observations.
"Mom, I was more comfortable in first grade than I was in second grade," Alexis said to me in the car one day.
"Why do you think that is?" I asked.
She thought for a few moments and then replied, "I was more confident, I think."
Confidence and comfort really do go hand-in-hand, don't they? We talked about the relationship between the two things for a few minutes. I discovered you can learn a lot from listening to an 8-year old.
Another day later in the same week, we were running through the grocery store. Alexis noticed that I had placed something unfamiliar to her in the cart.
"Mom, what is that for?" she asked.
I hesitated. She was referring to a package of pads (yay for post-baby fun). Before that moment, she had never asked about anything related to periods, so I hadn't filled her in. I wanted to do so in an age appropriate way and I really wanted to emphasize that it's no big deal. The kid is a worrier, but there's no sense in worrying about something years in advance and, again, it's no big deal.
I gave her a brief answer. Her face filled with worry. "Mom, that sounds uncomfortable," she replied. I addressed her concern as best I could, but then remembered our conversation about first grade vs. second grade. It was time to let her address her own concern.
"Hey, remember when you said you feel more comfortable when you are confident?" I said. She quickly replied that she did. "What makes you feel comfortable and confident?" I asked.
Alexis' list was a good one.
1. Wearing clothes that are cute like her black capri leggings (aka her Milli Vanilli pants) and a t-shirt.
2. Being around friends that are nice.
3. Doing something fun like going to an amusement park and riding roller coasters.
4. Listening to good music.
5. Doing something that she knows that she can do because she has done it before, like cartwheels and back walkovers.
6. Helping other people by doing things like tying a little kid's shoe or picking up something that somebody dropped in a store.
7. Doing things alone like reading a book or hanging out in her bedroom.
8. Having a fun day in Pittsburgh.
When she was done with her list, I realized how similar it is to my own. Many of the things involved moving, which is really my main way of being comfortable. If I'm in motion, I'm generally happy. If I'm sitting around like a bump on a log, I start to feel the ick setting in. I also noticed that some of the things she listed were things I would recommend that she do when having a period makes her feel uncomfortable. They work for me, so why not for her as well?
I circled the conversation back around and we talked about how all of the things that were on her list were things you can do while you have your period. Alexis seemed dubious, but then I asked her if she knows when I have my period.
She didn't.
It's really not a big deal.

Lately I've been really into doing face masks. I'm pretty sure they don't actually do anything good for my skin but they feel nice! I've also been going to bed earlier, which is probably the lamest answer you'll get to this question but I've apparently outgrown the ability to function on less than 7-8 hours of sleep.
One the biggest ways I pamper myself it to take some time for myself. Sometimes this is a bubble bath or going to bed early in a quiet dark room.
I get a pedicure every two weeks. Yes, it is an indulgence that I have not done before but it only take about an hour. I only discovered pedicures about 5 years ago and this is the first summer that I have made it a priority. Yay for pampering myself!
I'm a big fan of a "day of beauty"- it's ridiculous, but I feel so much better if I know my roots are touched-up, my eyebrows are in line, and I've got a mani/ pedi. I try to set aside an hour or two on the weekend just to do all of that, apply the good lotion, etc. It doesn't always happen, but when it does, it's so worth it.
I'm a mani/pedi girl. Speaking of, I really could use some pampering, my toes are looking sad for the end of summer!

I can think of so many things I would love to get - hair product for strengthening, nail supplies, skin treatments. Things that go unbought because of costs.
I'm really bad at pampering myself in general. Before our vacations, I've let myself get pedicures, but I don't actually like to get them, I just like the result.
I guess pampering myself would be letting myself not feel obligated to do one hundred and one chores/errands.
I have been allowing myself to take 30 minutes a day from our busy lives and sitting down with a book. It seems like it isn't much, but that 30 minutes of sanity can do wonders!
I let myself read at night for a bit instead of doing chores up to the minute I go to bed.
Massages are my favorite pampering. Wish I could afford to have them more often!
I take a bubble bath and read a good book

I pamper myself with massages. They also help with the muscle tightness from trying to carry a 4 year old and 2 year old at the same time. I keep telling him he is getting too big, but my arm picks him up anyway.
Wow. It's probably pretty bad that it took me a lot longer than it should have for me to think of a way I pamper myself. I go to the library, check out a book (or 7) and head to a coffee shop to read and people watch (I'm loving Panera right now...).
I get a pedicure after a race. It's my favorite form of pampering.
stretching out on the bed with the windows thrown open during a cool rain and reading a book without interruption (for 10 minutes?)
also, starbucks.
Pampering to me is binge watching my favorite series on Netflix or reading a good book.
Sleep!! I love a good nap.
I pamper myself by getting up early to exercise, and then rewarding myself with 15 minutes of reading a great book and drinking a yummy cup of coffee.
I pamper myself by getting a massage at least once a month. I have one tomorrow! I also get mani/pedi's which are fair;y new for me.

I take long baths with lavender and Epsom salts.
When I'm feeling like I need a little me-time, I am all about the manicure at home! There is something super relaxing about just sitting down and focusing on myself, and rolling a little creativity in there with some nail art never hurts, either! Gotta keep it fun! :)
Sometimes I pamper myself by hanging out at the library for an hour or so.

I don't get a chance to pamper myself often, but going anywhere solo, grabbing a drink from Starbucks, or getting a back rub would all be wonderful. :)
