You Have One Day, Pittsburgh
Look who decided to make an appearance!
In case you don't recognize him, that's Romero. He's Phipps Conservatory's Corpse Flower.
He started to bloom late in the day on Tuesday, which means you pretty much have until the end of Wednesday to go see him for yourself.
You will smell him before you see him, by the way. He smells like what would happen if a cat caught a mouse but didn't quite kill the mouse and the gimpy mouse crawled under your oven and then you turned on the self-cleaning option.
Which is to say that Romero smells like lightly baked roadkill. Yummy!
He was well worth the wait.
(Phipps is going to be open until 2:00 am and this really is your only chance to see him. Pack a little picnic lunch and go hang out for the afternoon!)

I just got back from a visit to see Romero. Waited in line for 40 minutes at 1am, but it was worth it to see the bloom up close. So beautiful...and stinky. It's definitely rotting flesh, and I also got a hint of Limberger cheese. Perhaps the mouse had a meal first? :)
OOO! So pretty! We were in Washington DC when theirs decided to bloom. Great pictures!
Is this the like the plant in Dennis the Mennis? Only blooms 1 every so many years?
It is one interesting looking plant. Obviously I do not know anything about gardening.
I love that the flower is named "Romero."
How very appropriate! ;)
I get what you like to photograph the flower :) but it sure is ugly!! forgive my ignorance, but which part is the "bloom" that everybody waits for? the red/green part or the part sticking up?
romero was worth the wait. loved him. even if i won't soon forget his odor.
