Every Time I Start to Think I Know What's Going On
The CD player in my car has been broken from the start. It seems that the only CDs that it will play are Signing Time CDs, and interestingly enough, it nearly always plays just one song, Move and Groove, over and over and over and over until my head explodes and my brain matter flies across the car, smashes into the radio console, and somehow manages to hit the off button. The Toddler, however, is very happy about this little "glitch." She sings along, signs along, dances along, and generally is one happy camper when she gets to hear her Signing Time buddy Rachel tell her to jump, dance, sway, etc.
I do not complain because at least I'm not listening to the purple dinosaur who does not exist in PA. (Shh . . . don't tell Alexis any different.)
So, imagine my confusion earlier today when we were driving to the mall, jamming to Move and Groove, and the Toddler very clearly said, "I wanna listen music."
It's a trick, I thought.
She repeated her request.
"Do you want to listen to Justin?" I asked. (We went through a SexyBack phase and for months that is all we listened to. I put the kabash on it when I heard Alexis correctly use the words "Sexy" and "back" in a sentence. Nobody under the age of 18 needs to be bringing the sexy anywhere.)
"No, I wan music."
It's a trick, I thought. "You want to listen to music?" I said.
"Yes."
"OK, let's see what is in the CD player," I said. Mr. Husband cautiously pushed the button that called up a different CD in the CD changer. Can you believe that button actually works? I HAD NO IDEA!
I flinched.
I prepared myself for the fit.
Coldplay started wafting from the speakers.
I moved to put my hand in place so that I could change the CD player back to Signing Time the instant the waling and whining commenced.
"Thank you!" Alexis said.
It's moments like that when I realize I really have no freakin' idea what I'm doing with this kid.

LOL! I guess this is as good a time as ever to admit The Boy's favorite group (actually, it was The Girl's as well) when he was about 5 was Disturbed! Eek! LOL!

It's funny that we both posted about music. I think Coldplay is probably pretty safe.
My kid is on a Metro Station kick.
It's moments like these that Alexis giggles to herself and says "I have you right where I want you."

Love it. I actually remember the day my kids got into Bon Jovi. One of the happiest days of my life!
A friend of mine had a baby our senior year in high school. She always listened to B-94 as she was driving the little girl around, and when she started talking/singing she would sing "Pour some sugar on me, cuz I need some love. Oooohh yea, fry me up!" Every time I hear that song, I think about her singing it.
What is Alexis putting on her arm in that picture?
She asked for the real deal, eh? I am trying an experiment inspired by AndreAnna's post (and now you, too) and bought a boxed set of Glenn Miller, Dean Martin& Benny Goodman. I am starting with swing & will see if maybe Sandra Boynton can be turned off?

And the sock has no freakin' idea what the kid is doing with it...but it appears Baby Shell approves :). Do you suppose that after the next time or two you and Alexis go for a drive, she could explain "Viva la Vida" to me? I love that song, and my new obsession is trying to figure out just exactly what it means. Tell her I'd appreciate it. And, really? Did she really say "Thank You"??? No more "Dank You"??? I think I'm gonna cry. I LOVE "Dank You."
OMG that's freakin' awesome. I've got a friend with slightly older kiddos (3 & 5) and he swears by never playing them kiddie music. He only played fun adult music and they've always asked for that instead of mind melting disney stuff.
I'm definitely going to try that.

If Gavin is in my car, he usually requests "Cows" (Sandra Boynton); but if he's in his father's truck he will request "Guitar" (read: John Mayer) or "Yellowbwick Woad" (Yellowbrick Road by Elton John). I miss the days that he used to request "Go-wiwwahs" (Gorillaz "Feels Good"). *sniff*
If you ever really think that you know what's going on with your kids....that's when you're in the MOST trouble.

I used to have to listen to Barbies Workout CD every time I took my girls to care. A 45 min round trip. Totally did my head in.
Then one day the girls decided they didn't like it anymore and it accidentally on purpose ended up in the bin...
These kids are put here to turn our hair grey. Honestly. It is all part of the plan of the hair dye companies...
I must praise Alexis' musical taste this time, I love Coldplay and Stella (2) has been listening to them since before she was born and loves them! Quiet time at our house includes Colplay's X&Y blasting on the stereo :-)
I am convinced more and more everyday that there is not much difference between parenting a toddler and treating someone who is bi-polar.
(And I am proud of Alexis for her musical choice!)
