I'm Kinda Proud of Me. And Her.
We had just pulled out of the preschool parking lot when Alexis said, "Can we stop at the barn and take pictures?"
After I figured out how to keep driving with my chin dragging on the ground, I put on my Cool Face and nonchalantly said, "Sure." I squeed in my head, but didn't let any of the excitement leak out of my face. This kid. This kid does NOT pose for photos. She has an occasional lapse in judgement, but it's very rare and it's never something that she declares in advance.
Of course, I didn't have all of my camera stuff with us in the car. That's how it works. I had to slum it with just one of my lenses, but at least I had my camera and that one lens.
Originally I thought this was going to be where I was going to get to be all WOOOOO! LOOK AT ME! because I shot every single photo in full manual mode. But, then I got home and realized I screwed up the white balance. So, all of these were adjusted in PhotoShop to correct THAT moment of stupidity. I blame a brain lapse brought on by my child, of all people, actually requesting a little photo shoot.
Next time, though. Next time I will get the EXACT photo I have in my head (the one I posted over the weekend has a stupid door handle intruding where I didn't want it, but I wasn't brave enough to try to get Alexis to move) and I will do it in full manual. It's my mission.

For next year's Podcamp, you should do a session on photography in general, or manipulating the pictures digitally... even if it's just goals and basic terminology.
I have a pretty good program but I don't know how to use 95% of it.
oh, that barn is delicious! I get caught up in the moment all the time and end up fixing my white balance, do don't fret it happens. That's why there is lightroom and photoshop...but I know what you mean. Getting it just right is so amazing! What lens did you have with you?? you know, i'm nosy like that!
@Ginger--I had my 50mm f/1.4. It's my absolute favoritest lens, but something with a little zoom would have been better since there are very few places to stand next to that barn.
yay for finally getting (almost) *that* shot.
she gets more gorgeous every day :)
She's gorgeous and wonderful! Kudos on getting that opportunity. You know it will only happen when SHE wants it to. :-)
(As to only having the 50mm f/1.4, does your zoom lens have a low enough aperture to give that beautifully narrow depth of field?)
My fave is that smudge of something on the corner of her mouth. It's nearly impossible for me to get a shot of Micah without something smudged and I feel a bit better knowing that not every kid in the world has a perfect spit-polish going on.
@Dave--Yeah. I have a f/2.8 that would be just as good.
@Karen--That red mark is from her sucking on her daggum lip. It's not as noticeable in other pics, but -OH- is it there. Still. GRRRR.
Love that she asked and that you had something with you to capture the moment.
You did a great job in the moment! Beautiful portraits.
The close-up of Alexis being goofy made me laugh at loud because HELLO! How could that smile not make you smile right back?! Then I realized that pic was right next to Mr. Happy Camel and I laughed again. You win. :)
Those are great, but I think I can picture the shot you want. Her outfit is so pretty! Can I ask, did you ever read your manual? Or am I the only one who refuses to do that?
@Jen - Kids come with manuals??? ;-)
These are wonderful! I especially love the second photo. I predict eventually you'll have trouble getting her to STOP posing. :)
