She's Growing Up To Be AWESOME
They were five of the longest minutes of my life. It was three years ago that I stood in our yard carefully placing styrofoam tombstones while Alexis watched. "What are these?" she asked.
For those five minutes, I regretted reveling in the spooky side of Halloween. Cutesy Winnie the Pooh decorations certainly would have been easier to explain to a three-year old, but then again, where is the fun in easy? I found my way out of the conversation and quickly went running back to my love of spooky stuff.
Fortunately, Alexis joined me not long after. By the time kindergarten rolled around, she was ALL IN.
I'm sorry my kid is so cool. It's genetics at work.
As kindergarten Alexis prepared for her night as an evil vampire, she made a request. She wanted to make a complete witch's kitchen in our dining room. She had tons of ideas about how we could go about creating it, but the key point was that we needed bottles for witch ingredients. A year ago I asked the husband to save some empty bottles and a year ago I planned to decorate those bottles for the witch's kitchen.
Um, we painted the bottles with glittery paint this past weekend. They still aren't fully decorated (I have to make labels--the stickers I found at Target just aren't cutting it), but at least we started them! A year later!
And we took care of one other Alexis idea while we were at it.
There are no words for how proud I am of Alexis for thinking of ripping a doll to pieces and shoving it in a jar.
It's floating in clear hand soap, by the way. Oh, and a few drops of red food coloring. Alexis said there needed to be blood, so I obliged.
Halloween is going to be SO fun with Alexis around, especially now that she's old enough to enjoy the spooky stuff.

How cool! You are so lucky, my little girl (she's 8) hates scary "things"...she still won't even attempt Triple B farm's Boo Barn, which is not even scary. It is just dark and geared toward younger kids...We tried dragging her in last year & she freaked as soon as we walked in, so of course we had to turn around lol....It sucks because Halloween is my favorite holiday & I just love spooky & scary things! Enjoy Halloween with Alexis :)
That is Too. Cool. You definitely have one awesome child!
Jealous! My kid is a wimp. :)
OH.MY.GOD! That is simply amazing, and Alexis is a genius!
I am So. Impressed.
That's an evil genius at work. And it's just one more thing that I kick myself for not thinking of first...
The doll parts in a jar are brilliant!
Last year was my first year having a house to decorate for Halloween. I actually hadn't planned to decorate until I learned that Halloween is a BIG DEAL in our neighborhood. (Very few people decorate for Christmas but nearly everyone decorates for Halloween.) Not to be left out I hastily gathered some inexpensive decorations...not thinking about how my then 2 year old might react. The hockey-masked specter in the window and the witches legs under the porch freaked him out. Luckily it wasn't debilitating, but he did avoid walking near the "monsters" whenever possible.
This year I have even more decorations since I hit up all the after holiday sales last year. None of my decorations are of the cutesy variety. Hopefully after a few years of indoctrination my kids will embrace the dark side as Alexis has.
Sometimes, you frighten me. That's the point, though, right?
PS Did you SERIOUSLY ask a hoarder to save you bottles?!?! How many did you end up with? ;)
@The Mommy -- That was a double-edged sword for The Hoarding One. They were beer bottles, so if he had too many, I would have given him crap about drinking too much. He still managed to use it as an excuse to buy singles of weird kind of beer under the guise of getting different shapes of bottles.
the halloween insanity didn't fall far from the tree and i love it!
and that photo of her dressed up and standing in the tombstones really is perfection.
Your child rocks.
